A still small voice

"And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake: And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice." 1 Kings 19:11-12

Elijah has just won the most spectacular victory of his life: fire fell from heaven on Carmel in front of all Israel. And the very next chapter shows him fleeing into the desert, asking to die.

That is a detail we skip, and it explains the whole passage. The man standing on the mountain is not short of signs. He has just received an enormous one, and it was not enough.

So God causes three displays of power to pass before him — wind that breaks rocks, earthquake, fire. Exactly the register of Carmel. And the text repeats the same line three times: the LORD was not there.

It is not that God cannot speak through the spectacular. He did so eight days earlier. It is that He will not be confined to it, and Elijah was in the process of confining Him.

"A still small voice" — the Hebrew says literally a sound of thin silence. An almost self-contradictory phrase that no translation renders well. What comes after the fire is not a small noise: it is a silence with a voice in it.

And here is what should stop us: to hear that, you have to have let the wind, the earthquake and the fire go by without leaving. Elijah stayed. Most of us would have concluded, somewhere around the wind, that God was not there.

Today. If you have been praying a long time without seeing anything spectacular, do not conclude too quickly. Stay after the fire. What comes next can only be heard in the silence you did not run from.
