Blessing at all times, this one included

"I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad. O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together. I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears." Psalm 34:1-4

It helps to know where David is writing this. The psalm's own heading says so: he has just come out from Abimelech, where he escaped death by pretending to be insane, letting spittle run down his beard so they would take him for a madman and drive him out. That is where "I will bless the LORD at all times" comes from.

It changes the reading. This is not the praise of a settled man. It is the praise of a man who has just saved his life through humiliation, and who decides, on the way out, that his mouth belongs to God.

The next line is the one we skip. "The humble shall hear thereof, and be glad." David is not addressing people who are doing well. He is calling to those in the same position he was in — and he calls them not to wait until things improve, but to listen to somebody blessing God.

That is the mechanism of corporate praise, and it is worth understanding. When you bless God out loud in the middle of a hard season, you are not only performing a private act: you are giving someone else permission to do the same. That is why "O magnify the LORD with me" comes immediately after. Praise is contagious.

And verse 4 arrives last, not first: "I sought the LORD, and he heard me." The deliverance is recounted after the decision to bless. David does not bless because he was delivered. He recounts the deliverance because he is blessing.

Today. Bless out loud, and in front of somebody. Not in your head. Silent praise has its place, but this kind is built to be overheard by someone in trouble who happened to be passing.
