Confessing to one another

"Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." James 5:16

Here is a verse where we always keep the second half and never the first. We quote "the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much" happily enough. We skip "confess your faults one to another."

Yet James joins them. In this passage the power of prayer is not detachable from the admission that precedes it. He is not saying confession makes prayer more polite; he is saying it makes it effectual.

Why? Because a fault kept secret manufactures two people: the one you show and the one you are. And it is the one you show who prays. You pray with a character. Nothing moves, and you cannot work out why.

We must say straight away what the text does not mean, because this verse has done damage. It does not say confess to everyone. It does not say narrate the details of your falls in public. There is no biblical mandate for forced disclosure, and a congregation is not a courtroom. "One to another" implies reciprocity: someone who tells you his faults too. If confession only runs one way, that is no longer this verse — that is a power relationship.

What James describes is one person, or two. Someone who knows, and who prays. And the promised outcome is not forgiveness — forgiveness comes from God alone and has never required a witness. The promised outcome is healing. What stays hidden keeps hurting; what is said aloud in front of a brother loses its power to isolate you.

This week. Find one person. One. Someone who does not talk, and for whom you can be the same. Start small — not with the heaviest thing, with a true thing. Trust is built in that direction.

If you have nobody, say that to God as a real need, and not as a settled fate. Many believers have never had that brother because they never asked for one.
