Who the fight is actually against

"For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places." Ephesians 6:12

This verse often gets used to excuse everything and examine nothing. We quote it to say the neighbour is not the problem — which is true — but we also use it to avoid ever looking at the part of a story that is plain human responsibility.

Paul says something precise: our wrestling is not against flesh and blood. He does not say flesh and blood have nothing to do with it. He says they are not the target. Those are not the same claim.

That has an immediate practical consequence. If a man harms you, he remains responsible for what he does; but naming him as the enemy loses you the fight, because you are striking where the fight is not happening. You can win against him and remain in exactly the same place.

The list is ordered: principalities, powers, rulers, spiritual wickedness. These are words of power and structure. Paul is not describing scattered ghosts; he is describing an organisation. Which explains why some things do not yield to persuasion: a habit settled into a family, a corruption everyone complains about and nobody can stop, an atmosphere in a place. These things have thickness.

And the location of the fight is surprising: "in high places" — in the heavenly places. The same phrase, elsewhere in this letter, names where Christ is seated, and where we are seated with Him. So the battle is not fought on enemy ground: it is fought where the outcome is already known. We are not fighting to obtain a victory; we are holding a position already won.

Today. Take the conflict occupying you. Write on one side what belongs to a man — a wrong, a decision, a negligence, your own included. On the other, what belongs to a system or a power. Deal with the first by speech and truth. Deal with the second by prayer and fasting. Confuse the two and you lose both.
